Abstract
This essay briefly examines the turbulent history of the “Blavatsky” phase of the London Theosophical movement; in particular, it focuses on the disparity between the public rhetoric of the Theosophical Society's leadership and the deeper motivations which inspired many Londoners to join the movement's ranks.
