Abstract

The thrust of government initiatives including The Patient's Charter (1991), the House of Commons Report on the Maternity Services (1992) and the Report of the Expert Maternity Group (Department of Health, 1993) is that users and carers must be at the centre of services. Women, midwives, obstetricians, GPs and others should be maintaining a dialogue and acting upon their plans for the improvement of the maternity services based on the principles out lined in the Department of Health (1993) report.
