Abstract

We have studied a Polysaccharide-Borax system, in which borate ions serve as crosslinkers between polymer chains. The rheological properties have been investigated in dilute regime as well as in more concentrated regime. We have shown that, under certain conditions, the intrinsic viscosity passes through a maximum and then decreases abruptly. In the semidilute regime, intermolecular associations lead to the formation of a network structure. Oscillatory shear measurements have been used for studying this structure, particularly at the gel point. On the other hand steady shear measurements show a complex and unusual shear thickening behaviour of this structure.
