Abstract

ABSTRACT SOME rheological properties of the seeds of Yucca filifera have been studied. The rupture strength of the seeds under compression was independent of the rate of strain in the range of 0.24 to 24.2 percent/s. Rupture occurs with a single crack through the entire seed parallel to the direction of the applied compressive force. The seeds are viscoelastic, showing mechanical hysteresis losses upon cyclic loading and stress relaxa-tion. The short term stress relaxation behavior can be described by a two-term exponential equation repre-senting two Maxwell elements in a generalized Maxwell Model.
