Abstract

Trisilanolphenyl (TSP)-Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) was melt blended with poly (trimethylene terephthalate) (PTT) using a co-rotating twin screw extruder having three kneading zone for better dispersion. The TSP-POSS influence the processing, rheology, melting and crystallization behaviour of nano-composite which was evaluated by measuring the torque during extrusion, melt flow index, and melt rheology by capillary rheometer, melting and crystallization behaviour by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The nanocomposites exhibited shear-thinning behaviour and the viscosity was well-described by the power law in this shear rate region. The addition of TSP-POSS enhanced the pseudoplasticity, i.e. increased the shear thinning behavior. With increasing TSP-POSS concentration, the shear stress/viscosity increased, while the power law index (n) decreased, and this effect is more significant at higher filler concentrations (10 wt %). Results showed that TSP-POSS acts as a nucleating agent and at a lower concentration (0.25–2%) act as a flow promoter.
