Abstract

The organometallic complex Rh(π-C 3H 5)CO(PPh 3) 2 adsorbed on γ-alumina has been found an effective catalyst for gas-phase hydrogenation and hydroformylation of ethylene and propylene at atmospheric pressures and 60 – 90 °C. The existence of monolayer adsorption of the complex leading to maximal use of catalytic sites was demonstrated by measurement of nitrogen adsorption. Strong mutual interactions between the carrier, the ligand PPh 3 and the complex as such, were proved by infrared spectroscopy and adsorption measurements. Infrared spectra of the catalyst under actual reaction conditions in a continuous flow system gave no indication for catalytic intermediates, but revealed the presence of an inactive species.
