Abstract

Investigations of the strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) are simplified by the use of model catalysts in which the metal particles are supported on stable, well characterized single-crystal substrates. We have used surface-sensitive electron spectroscopies, CO chemisorption measurements and Auger sputter profiling to study Rh/TiO 2 (110) model catalysts. The dynamics of oxidation of reduced TiO 2 surfaces have been investigated as a function of annealing temperature. High temperature reduction of Rh/TiO 2 (110) catalysts to an SMSI state is accompanied by the formation of a suboxide of Ti on the Rh particles, thus blocking CO chemisorption sites.
