Abstract

Moroberekan is a traditional upland rice cultivar that has shown durable resistance to rice blast. It was crossed to the highly susceptible cultivar C039, and 281 F7 recombinant inbred (RI) lines were produced. Most polymorphic RFLP markers showed skewed segregation towards indica alleles. Field and greenhouse tests indicated the presence of complete and partial resistance in the RI lines. Using five Pyricularia grisea isolates from the Philippines, one dominant gene for complete resistance was detected and mapped between RG163 and RG788 on chromosome 4. Eighteen marker loci defining 9 chromosome segments were found to be associated with effects on lesion number. The five QTLs with the strongest effects accounted for 60% of the variation for lesion number. The results suggest that durable blast resistance in rice may be associated with the presence of multiple complete and partial resistance genes.
