Abstract

IntroductionIn paraplegic patients, the stimulation of flexor reflex afferents (FRA) induces the usual flexion reflex followed by a later response, probably responsible for the clinical effects. Method This review summarizes the evidence that the late response is a genuine late reflex related to the late flexion reflex described in the acute spinal cat after Dopa and then to the spinal stepping generator. Conclusion This shows that some elements of the spinal circuitry on which the generation of stepping rhythms relies in animals exist in man.
