Abstract

Wal-Mart, required its 100 largest suppliers to introduce RFID in 2005. Tens of thousands of its suppliers over the world are certain to follow up, which would lead to a revolutionary change to retail operations. Thousands of suppliers as well as local mass-market retailers in Taiwan are bound to be influenced enormously. In order to make timely preparations for this epoch-making change, there is an urgent need to investigate the factors affecting the use of RFID in retailing, and to develop appropriate responses. The main thrust of the proposed research is to collect technical and management information on RFID and bar code. In addition, by using systems simulation techniques, the Taguchi method is applied initially to plan a minimum number of experiments. Orthogonal array techniques are used to investigate the simultaneous variation of several parameters and the investigation of interactions between parameters. Matrix experiments using standard L16 orthogonal arrays are employed to evaluate the effects of parameters in recycling of aluminium dross and scrap materials. A statistical analysis of signal-to-noise ratio is followed by performing an analysis of variance (ANOVA), in order to estimate the optimum levels and to determine the relative magnitude of the effect of various factors. To explore planning strategies for the introduction of RFID by Hypermarket, I conduct RFID systems evaluation and establish management guidelines for new operational systems. The results might be helpful for retailers to improve their trading quality and level of service and to enhance their competitiveness, which might also create new commercial opportunities for them.
