Abstract

This paper presents a brief summary of the health effects data concerning radiofrequency (RF) exposures and includes measurements made on a 5 kilowatt (kW) carbon dioxide (CO2) laser at an industrial laser manufacturing facility. The measurements were made as part of a National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) health hazard evaluation. The particular laser evaluated contained an RF generator that produced up to 40 kW at a frequency of 13.56 megahertz (MHz). Measurements were made during “normal use” conditions as well as in a “worst case” maintenance/service mode using an RF survey meter with probes for electric and magnetic fields. Additionally, body current measurements were made using an experimental body current detector system. In normal use, the laser contained appropriate RF shielding; however, during maintenance and/or service operations much of the inherent shielding can be removed either directly or as a result of bypassing system interlocks. This paper presents a brief summary of the health effects data concerning radiofrequency (RF) exposures and includes measurements made on a 5 kilowatt (kW) carbon dioxide (CO2) laser at an industrial laser manufacturing facility.
