Abstract

Free electron lasers (FELs) require very bright electron beams. During the past few years, rf guns have demonstrated their potentiality to produce such bright beams. A review of the on-going worldwide effort to develop this new technology is given. Present limitations and possible improvements are also presented. General design considerations are introduced.
