Abstract

An RF front-end that could handle strong to weak input signals without the need for a low-noise amplifier, for use in a terrestrial wideband TV tuner IC, was designed and its performance was measured. It was found to exhibit >20 dB attenuation at the image frequency by implementing a 6th-order band-pass filter from 90 to 770 MHz with an autotuning function. The measured noise figure at IF output (57 MHz) was 5.0 to 5.5 dB in the UHF band and 4.8 to 9.0 dB in the VHF/CATV band at maximum gain. The TV tuner IC was fabricated using a 0.25-μm RF-CMOS process. The overall dynamic range was demonstrated to be -78 to +5 dBm (13- segment ISDB-T, 64QAM, CR=7/8) using an external SAW filter, IF AGC amplifier, and OFDM demodulator.
