Abstract

This chapter discusses the behavior of rats in the runway conditioning situation that has been the subject of extensive experimental and theoretical interest for several decades. The training procedure most frequently employed with the runway is instrumental appetitive conditioning and the variables which have been manipulated most frequently may be described as “reward variables.” Delay of reward (DR) is defined by an interval, which is allowed to elapse while the rat is in the goal box before reward is made available. If food is obtained in the goal box on every trial, then the number of rewards is equal to the number of trials and a consistent reward (CR) procedure is in effect. It is possible to vary the percentage of trials rewarded (PTR), however, so that a partial reward procedure is in effect. The relative frequency with which trials are rewarded may also be expressed as a proportion (P).
