Abstract

Examinations of Chinese literature and art of the 1930s usually focus on the works of major figures in the coastal cities. Where the political issues of the period are involved, again the focus is urban, centered on the activities of such organizations as the League of Left-Wing Writers. While the urban milieu was significant, there was another important complex of developments at the same time-one occurring in the rural soviets and one serving as a prelude to the more noted developments in literature and art in the Yan'an period.
