Abstract

Our acquiescence to a material motivated life experience distracts us from creating more ecologically and socially transformative educational contexts and institutional systems. Examining how our relationship to an abusive market culture in larger Western society dictates our educational culture contexts, this article explores metaphysical alternatives to a market-based educational mindset. As spiritual practitioners, we have a moral passion to enhance our ability to contemplate our collective purpose, identify roots of social and ecological injustice, explore imagination, and practice compassionate action. As was realized within a teacher education course community, revitalizing the “spiritual commons” in our daily contexts has possibility to influence the direction of our educational institutions.
