Abstract

Transport systems are a very powerful tool to overcome deprivation, reduce inequalities, assure access to essential services and increase well-being. Low-income and other population groups are particularly vulnerable to adverse transport conditions, hindering them from taking part in multiple socioeconomic activities, reducing their chances for development, and pushing them towards poverty and social exclusion. In the light of the current societal changes triggered by the Covid-19 pandemic and challenges regarding new services, digitalisation, climate change and transition towards climate neutrality, this study aims to reframe and analyse the manifold components of transport poverty in Europe through a systematic literature review. We highlight many issues to transform the built environment making it sustainable, fair, just, intergenerational and intragenerational friendly and inclusive.
