Abstract

The rotational isomerism about he C-C bond of the ethane skeleton of the ssulphosuccinic acid part of Aerosol OT [sodium bis (2-ethylhexyl) sulphosuccinate] has been established from measurements of the intramolecular carbon-proton distance. The through-the-space distances were measured based on the selective heteronuclear nuclear Overhauser effect taking a fixed carbon-proton distance as reference. It was found that the molecule is predominately in the gauche conformation in the micellar system whereas the trans conformers prevail in the microemulsion. A rapid transition from gauche to trans was observed between w 0 = 6 and 12.
