Abstract

The genus Basistemon (Scrophulariaceae) consists of eight species of low shrubs with few-seeded fruits. The genus is allied to Angelonia and shares with it the saccate corolla tubes with internal glandular hairs and exalbuminous seeds with reticulate exotestae. Basistemon klugii and B. argutus are described as new and the new combination B. pulchellus is made based on Desdemona pulchella S. Moore. Basistemon Turcz. (Scrophulariaceae) is a ge- nus of low shrubs that has been classified in the Bignoniaceae, Verbenaceae, and Scrophu- lariaceae. Plants are found on the eastern slopes of the Andes from Venezuela to Bolivia and into the chaco areas of Paraguay and adjacent Brazil and Argentina. Few plants have been collected, many of which are misidentified. The problem has resulted, in part, from the confused taxonomic history of the genus. Turc- zaninow (1893) placed Basistemon in the Ver- benaceae, noting the few ovules and the shrub- by habit. In an easily overlooked addendum, Bentham (1876) transferred it to the Scrophu- lariaceae because the ovules are pendulous, not basal, and because the inflorescence is not ter- minal. Wettstein (1895) included it under Bran- disia A. Gray in the Scrophulariaceae, tribe
