Abstract

A revision of the tube-building amphipod family Ampithoidae on a world-wide basis, using numerical analytical methods, recognizes 13 genera of which 2 are newly described. Cluster analysis and principal components ordination reveal that the form of the first gnathopod is of basic significance in differentiation of genera within the family Ampithoidae. Phyletic relationships are examined and related to evolutionary sequences in morphology, behaviour, and zoogeography.
