Abstract

ObjectiveTo know the level of evidence and degrees of recommendation regarding functional taping and its effectiveness in patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS). Search strategyA search in the literature was done in the scientific databases PUBMED, Cochrane Library, PEDro, Dialnet and CSIC of clinical trials published between 2000 and 2014 with human participants written in English or Spanish. The search terms were patellofemoral pain syndrome, chondromalacia patellae, patellar tape, athletic tape, rehabilitation, physical therapy and physiotherapy. ResultsFifteen out of the 263 studies found were included based on the inclusion criteria. Most of the studies analyzed showed clinical benefits regarding pain reduction after treatment with functional taping. ConclusionsThe results indicate that functional taping is effective in the treatment of PFPS pain, however more research is needed to confirm its benefits on muscular activity and proprioception.
