Abstract
The chemistry faculty revised the first-year curriculum to deal with several perceived problems: (i) students who mistakenly thought they already understood general chemistry, (ii) students who were inadequately prepared for general chemistry, and (iii) the department's need to more adequately meet the inorganic guidelines of the ACS Committee on Professional Training. Three new courses were devised to address these problems: an introductory foundations course, a one-semester accelerated principles course, and a first-year inorganic course that includes a great deal of descriptive chemistry in the class and laboratory. Each course is described briefly.
