Abstract

An extensive revision of the analysis of the Cu IV spectrum is presented together with results of parametrical energy-level calculations; configurations considered are 3d 8, 3d 74s and 3d 74p. The importance of calculated line strengths is demonstrated. Comparison with earlier published material learns that only 48 out of the 163 old level values hold; 107 new values are given, but levels of 3d 75s could not be found, so that the old value of the ionization potential must be considered as dubious. Unresolved Zeeman patterns have been obtained at 6.7 tesla; observed splittings between σ + and σ - components are compared with calculations.
