Abstract

This symposium reflects the serious and enthusiastic determination of the contributors to reduce the death rates from cancer of the cervix by early diagnosis and by the selection of appropriate treatment methods for the individual patient. Exfoliative cytology has proved its value in early detection of cancer but its general application at regular intervals to the whole population at risk presents a most serious practical problem. Attention is thus given to simplifying screening methods or rendering them practicable for mass application by developing scanning devices in screening cytology (here discussed by R. C. Mellors) or the use of chemical tests in preliminary screening (cf. below, Fishman and Kasdon).
