Abstract

This book, parts of which have already been published in the form of articles in learned journals, deals with the rise and early developments of drama and the novel in modern Arabic literature. It consists of one background chapter entitled Historical Beginnings, six chapters concerned respectively with the Rise of the Arab Drama in Syria and Egypt, Ya?qub Sannuc and the Rise of the Arab Drama in Egypt, the Translation of Western Fiction, the Revival of the Maqama, Salim al-Bustani and the Beginning of Modern Arabic Fiction, from al-Bustani to Jurji Zayddn: Francis Marrash and Nu'mdn al-Qasatli and Jurji Zaydan.
