He has worked at several universities, including 19 years at Leeds. His publications have included many articles and textbooks, and A Concise Pronouncing Dictionary of British and American English. In 1974 he recast the treatment of pronunciation in the third edition of A. S. Hornby's Oxford Advanced Dictionary of Current English. This was the first time that American pronunciations were given in a major British EFL dictionary.
