Abstract

Elie Carafoli, High‐speed aerodynamics, Pergamon Press, 710 pp., 1956, $15.00.Carafoli's book is the English translation of the Roumanian volume Aerodinamica Vitezelor Mari. From his own work and that of others, he has attempted to provide the reader with a mathematical treatment of all aerodynamic problems which involve the compressible flow of air up to hypersonic speeds. Thus, the problems of subsonic wind tunnels, wings, and bodies are treated first, followed by similar treatments of the transonic and supersonic regimes. In 700 pages it is obviously impossible for him to go into great detail on any one subject with the result that the book abounds with mathematics and relatively little written text. The text is surprisingly clear and easy to follow.
