Abstract

The scientific review article plays an important role in curating information to guide what is worthy of being included in the accepted knowledge base of a disciplinary field. This chapter examines how such knowledge bases are constructed in science and the types of review articles that have guided their development. Until the end of the twentieth century, review articles could be written by an experienced scientist or group in the discipline. However, the rapidly increasing volume of papers being published recently requires the development and implementation of information technology tools to aid in the curation of research and the preparation of reliable reviews.
