Abstract

This book goes far to justify the publisher's claim for it is “an absolute necessity for everyone whose work involves ionising radiation”, being a comprehensive guide to the subject, and one which does not demand any special previous training for understanding the basic principles of the subject. Whilst in one small volume a complete text-book cannot be expected for the professional health physicist, it covers a great deal of the ground, and gives useful references at the end of each chapter to published work which deals more fully with the subjects covered. In dealing with the historical background of the subject, the author surprisingly omits any mention of the British X-ray and Radium Protection Committee, and dates the first practicable steps in protection from the inception of the International Committee which was ultimately to become the I.C.R.P.
