Abstract

Generally, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act prohibits postsecondary institutions from disclosing personally identifiable information from a student's education record to a third party without the student's consent. However, FERPA permits an educational institution to make a nonconsensual disclosure in certain circumstances. This article explores the various exceptions to FERPA's general consent requirement.
