Abstract
■ This article critically evaluates the health belief model in relation to children's nursing practice ■ The influence of such diverse issues as sickness behaviours, developmental differences, cultural and socio-economic status are considered ■ The health belief model is a useful means of trying to understand chronically sick children's attitudes to treatment ■ Knowledge of family health beliefs may help to develop health promotion programmes that foster position beliefs
