Abstract

These four books are some of the early publishing fruits of the Research Institute of Irish and Scottish Studies, established in Aberdeen in 2001. They are all in the area of the Diaspora Programme, one of three ambitious streams of research launched at the outset. Early publication augurs well for the publication of work on the remaining themes within the Diaspora Programme, and in the other two streams. The launch of a journal of Irish and Scottish Studies also underpins this ambitious activity. The scholarly mobility created by the Institute (itself founded in the context of the original Irish-Scottish Initiative in 1995) in pursuing formal ties with institutions in Ireland and in its recruitment of staff and post-doctoral fellows, has been greatly enhanced with the passage of time.
