RIIS has been at the University of Colorado at Boulder as the Joseph Negler Professor of Music since 2002 and as Director of the American Music Research Center since 1992. His most recent book, published as part of the Yale Broadway Masters series, is entitled Frank Loesser. He served as a senior scholar, with a Fulbright Fellowship, at the University of Lüneburg (Germany) in 2005–6.
