Abstract

In the background of energy internet, power systems in China have witnessed a great increase of renewable energy generation and ultra-high voltage (UHV) alternative current/directive current (AC/DC) interconnection between reginal power grids, which call for increasing requirement of reserve capacity to cater for system contingency and net load power fluctuations. Meanwhile, reserve resources from the demand side, energy storage, and adjacent grids will become important supplement to the conventional generation side reserve. The current categorization and management mode of ancillary services based on “The two rules” in China can hardly satisfy management requirements of future power system. With this respect, a new reserve categorization system is proposed the perspective of controlling process. The response time and duration requirements of each type of reserve services are specified. The new reserve categorization system integrates various reserve sources from generators, networks, demand side, and energy storage. What type of reserve services they can provide is also discussed. The potential issues to implement the new reserve system are discussed.
