Abstract

The development of alkali-activated materials (AAMs) to replace ordinary Portland cement (OPC) under chloride-containing environments has been widely investigated by academia and industry for decades. Due to varied mix proportions and parameters applied, studies on the chloride resistance of AAMs are inconsistent and require to be systematically analysed. In this review, the existing knowledge about chloride transport in AAMs is systematically reviewed. Chloride transport mechanisms in AAMs and influencing parameters are discussed. Different testing methods are evaluated and the feasibility of AAMs to replace OPC is demonstrated. Roles of different precursors, activators and admixtures on the phase evolution, pore structure, chloride binding capacity and pore solution are discussed in detail. The types and ratios of precursors, activators and admixtures are recommended. Finally, the limitations of existing research and possible future research directions are proposed.
