Abstract

Abstract Knowledge of the New Zealand trachyrincine grenadiers is reviewed. Idiolo‐phorhynchus andriashevi Sazonov, 1981 and Trachyrincus longirostris (Gunther, 1878) are redescribed and Trachyrincus aphyodes n. sp. is described. T. aphyodes differs from T. longirostris, with which it has been confused, by having more pyloric caeca (119–211 cf. 35–62) and a larger mouth (upper jaw length 29.4–34.0 cf. 24.7–28.2% head length). A key to the three known New Zealand trachyrincine grenadiers is given.
