Abstract
The Nurses and Midwives Act of 1985 governs the nursing and midwifery profession in the Seychelles. A major review of this Act was initiated in February 2011, which aimed to produce a modern Act that would reflect the changing roles of the nursing and midwifery professions in the Seychelles. Methods: Comparative reviews were undertaken of existing national nursing and midwifery acts from the region and the world. Focus group discussions were held with policy makers, nurses, midwives, other health professions and health consumers. Results: The review of the Act produced a draft bill of key reforms, including identification of an extended scope of practice for nurses and midwives, establishment of a licence renewal process, a full-time registrar position for the nursing council, and provision of government funds for these activities on an annual basis. Conclusion: The review of the Act generated new ideas and revealed areas needing amendments so as to align with evolving regional and global trends in the nursing and midwifery professions.
