Abstract

The utilization of mobile X-ray devices can make radiology services more efficient. It makes radiology examinations easier, especially for patients who can't move or can't be moved to the X-ray room, such as examination in emergency and intensive care units (ICU). Mobile X-ray machines, on the other hand, are becoming increasingly popular. However, there are numerous radiation safety flaws in mobile X-ray machines. A mobile X-ray machine is less safe than a fixed X-ray machine, but it is safer than a portable X-ray machine. In fixed X-ray machines, image receptors are present. It positioned anti-scatter grids in the X-ray tube's path. In mobile X-ray, since the X-rays are wheel-driven, the direction of the tube can be changed and the length of distance from the tube to the patient changed can also be changed freely, so the primary radiation beam can go anywhere. If the primary beam is not used by a professional radiographer, it poses a significant radiation risk. Furthermore, the mobile X-ray is frequently repositioned, that potentially changing the exposure technical factors. The provision regarding the use of mobile X-ray machines has been revised into performance provisions in BAPETEN Regulation No. 4 of 2020, stating that there is no specific condition requirement to use mobile X-ray machines. According to one of the provisions, mobile X-rays should only be used for examinations where it is not possible to move patients to the X-ray room. This provision is appropriate to maintain radiation safety in the use of mobile X-ray machines, which are not he same in terms of safety as fixed X-ray machines. However, because many mobile X-ray machines are widely used in radiology rooms, the provisions may cause some issues in their implementation. Furthermore, it is not in line with Ministry of Health Regulation No. 24 of 2020. Further guidelines are needed to answer this problem and the needs of health services and ensure radiation safety.
