Abstract
This article outlines various changes that are occurring to the IEEE Color Books series. Specifically, the release of the new IEEE Std. 3004.8. This article covers a few highlights of the Standard's contents focusing on the forest products industries. Initiated with previous content from Chapter 10 (Motor Protection) of IEEE Std. 242 (Buff Book), contributions were received from end users, manufacturers, and consultants from various parts of the world. The changes reflect advancements in protection technologies including practical user input and field experiences. The material includes expanded details for reduced voltage motor starting, recommended protection functions using multifunction motor protection relays (Device 11M) for contactor controlled fused starters and breaker controlled starters, along with 1-line and 3-line diagrams, adjustable speed drive applications, dc motor protection, motor bus transfer, online partial discharge monitoring, and a detailed example of motor protection using Device 11M.
