Abstract

The importance of biogas energy potential in the household sector of rural areas in Turkey is explained. It is observed that in 1986, 42% of 44·4 mtoe total energy consumption was used in the household sector; and the use of animal and agricultural wastes constituted 17% (3·2 mtoe) of the household energy consumption. R&D activities and the demonstration programs held in the country up to now are reviewed. The construction details of the present-day systems are reviewed. The design characteristics of the mostly used 12 m 3 fixed dome Chinese-type digester are explained. Economics, material shortage, operation, and the people's acceptance are considered to be the main factors preventing the diffusion of biogas technology. The adaptability of biogas programs within the country's structure is also discussed from the socio-economic point of view.
