Abstract
Abstract The concept of ocular surface diseases has evolved over 4 decades to involve specific medical and surgical approaches designed to remedy the diverse but specific disorders that beset the ocular surface. As such, the surgical strategies comprise the following: superficial keratectomy, conjunctival autograft transplantation, limbal autograft and allograft transplantation, ex vivo limbal expansion autografts, amnion membrane transplantation, and keratoprosthesis. The appropriate applications of these surgical approaches, as reviewed here, have enormously advanced our ability to reconstruct the anatomy and restore the vision of the diseased or damaged ocular surface.
