Abstract

The selection of the most suitable instrument for measuring the flow of sewage is especially important due to the urgent work of sewage treatment and complex measurement environment of sewage systems. To this end, the current work reviews a number of sewage flow measuring instruments divided into four categories of differential pressure flowmeters, open channel flowmeters, electromagnetic flowmeters, and ultrasonic flowmeters and introduces a new retractable portable multifunctional flowmeter. The common flow measuring instruments are also introduced since they are the basis of sewage flow measurement. Moreover, we extensively compare the advantages and disadvantages of these instruments, analyze their ranges of application, and discuss their prospects. Compared with the traditional flow measuring instruments, the new retractable portable multifunctional flowmeter can measure the flow area of sewage pipes, the degree of siltation, and the average water flow in the drain pipes with silt deposits more accurately. In the future, the improvement in accuracy is still the research focus, and sewage flow measuring instruments will have a broader market prospect and development space with the rapid development in the electronic information technology.
