Abstract

Progress made since the start of isotopic analysis of the important atmospheric trace gas carbon monoxide is reviewed. A systematic discussion of the main processes leading to variations in stable isotope ratios for 13C and 18O is given. Also the recently discovered deviation in the 17O content of atmospheric CO is discussed. Further the role of 14CO in atmospheric chemistry as a gauge for atmospheric hydroxyl is elucidated.
