Abstract

Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1981, Vol 26(1), 59. Reviews the book, Macro Organizational Behavior: The Goodyear Series in Administration and Business Management by Robert H. Miles (1980). Miles proceeds to demonstrate, with stunning success, what sociological psychology looks like, a demonstration of importance to social psychologists and industrial-organizational psychologists. Miles develops chapters that lead to the strengths of psychologists, chapters on topics such as tasks, sociotechnical systems, causal texture, process models, boundary roles, organizational effectiveness, and two much-needed chapters on conflicts and organizational politics. The text is up-to-date, very well written, empirically grounded, sprinkled with cases of direct relevance to topics discussed, and has the best secondary summaries yet written on the nature of the environment. This book faces stiff competition from other well-regarded macro books. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved)
