Abstract

Commercial thermography started around 30 years ago as a spin-off from military development in the area of thermal weapon-sights. In the early days of thermography many applications were discovered. Actually most of todays applications were identified already during the first years. The development of the applications were, however, in most cases hampered by limitations in available technology. During the last 10 years thermography has benefitted greatly from the general development of technology in particularly the following areas: - infrared detectors - digital electronics - computer technology - computer software - storage media The development in these areas have enabled the suppliers of thermographic equipment to develop systems that meet the application requirements. The technology development and the associated volume growth has also brought down the cost of thermographic equipment considerably since the early days of thermography. The other major driving force in the development of commercial thermography besides the technology development is the emphasis on quality and productivity in todays industry.
