Review of Hoplotylus S'Jacob (Nematoda: Pratylenchidae)

Abstract

Two new species of Hoplotylus, H. silvaticus and H. sjacobi, are described from North Carolina, U.S.A. and New Zealand, respectively. H. silvaticus is similar to H. femina s'Jacob, but has a functional spermatheca and a more rounded, broader tail (H. femina: c' = 2.5-3.1; H. silvaticus: c' = 1.7-2.5). The tail of H. silvaticus is annulated dorsally to the tail tip; that of H. femina is mostly smooth. Specimens from New Jersey, U.S.A., reported in the literature as H. femina, are assigned to H. silvaticus. H. sjacobi differs from H. silvaticus and H. femina by having a longer, narrower tail (c' = 3.3-4.3) and stylet knobs whose edges in profile diverge anteriorly. The stylet knob edges of H. silvaticus and H. femina are parallel.
