Abstract
A critical element of the planning process for high-speed intercity passenger rail (HSR) investments is the development of ridership estimates for new services as well as projecting the impacts of new travel options (i.e., HSR) on existing modes of transportation. This paper presents a review of existing research on HSR ridership and the impacts of HSR development on the broader transportation system. Global ridership is estimated to be in excess of 1 billion annual trips. Direct “before and after” evidence from several HSR corridors reveals additional detail of how HSR impacts traveler mode choice. The findings from this review are applicable to a broad range of HSR planning and policy development activities that require an understanding of the ridership and transportation system impacts of HSR.
