Abstract

Canine transmissible venereal sarcoma (CTVS) is usually a sexually transmitted neoplasm of the external genitalia of dogs. This tumour is unique in oncology because it was the ¢rst tumour to be transmitted experimentally, this being achieved by the Russian veterinarian Nowinsky in 1876. This stimulated a lively interest among scientists and became a new starting point for the study of oncology. CTVS has been studied and reported extensively since the early days of nineteenth century, but a recent, widely circulated, review of this condition has not been published. This review is designed to unify the epidemiological, pathological, immunological and therapeutic concepts related to CTVS.
