Abstract

With a heightened emphasis on patient safety and a lowered tolerance for the occurrence of “never events” there is a need for improved practices. Evidence-based knowledge bridges this gap by providing direction for best practices that ensure consistent and sustained safe patient care and optimal outcomes. Perioperative nursing has a long-standing and well-respected position of advocating for safe patient care. With intimate knowledge of the counting process, perioperative nurses, as key stakeholders in the multidisciplinary approach, must contribute to the body of evidence regarding best practices for effective surgical counts.
