Imagine yourself viewing a museum diorama depicting the flora and fauna of the Arctic; you are encouraged to push a button and suddenly find yourself bathed in natural sounds: wind flowing over the tundra, groundwater percolating through permafrost, and, in between, vocalizations of birds, mammals, and perhaps even insects. Odds are that soundscape came from Wild Sanctuary, Krause's organization that specializes in recording sounds from natural environments. Krause is a polymath whose credentials range from being a member of an early-sixties folk group, the Weavers, to providing sounds for >250 record albums and multiple films, as well as holding a Ph.D. from Union Institute and University – a school dedicated to nontraditional educational models.
